JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University women's basketball team defeated Barry University Friday night in their season opener in the 2017 GSC/SSC Crossover Classic. The classic, hosted by Union, features Union and Delta State from the Gulf South Conference and Barry University and Nova Southeastern University from the Sunshine State conference. Nova knocked off Delta State 57-53 in the first game. 
The Lady Bulldogs started off the game with an 8-0 lead. Barry's Stephane Grande scored their first three points of the game at the 6:50 mark of the first quarter. Union soon responded with back to back three-pointers from Tiffany Rechis and Chelsey Shumpert.
The Lady Bulldogs kept their lead in throughout the first quarter despite the Bucs making a late run in the half making the score at the end of the first quarter 19-17. 
Shumpert scored Union's first six points of a strong second quarter for the Lady Bulldogs. Union's defense held Barry scoreless for the second quarter. The Lady Bulldogs scored 19 points in the quarter, extending their lead at half to 38-17.
Barry's Kiara Palmer broke the Bucs scoring drought with a bucket to begin the second half. The Lady Bulldogs continued to extend their lead. Union added 25 points to their score in the third quarter with four different Lady Bulldogs contributing. Sara Lytle, Shumpert, and Anna Lea Little all scored from 3-point range in the third quarter. At the end of the third quarter, Union lead 63-30.
Rechis jump started the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer for the Lady Bulldogs. Union's biggest lead of the game was 36 points early in the fourth quarter. Ida Andersson for Barry hit a pair from 3-point range late as the Bucs cut the final scored to 73-50.
Shumpert lead Union with a career high 27 points, nine rebounds, and three assists.  Sara Lytle added 20 points for the Lady Bulldogs. Union was 46 percent from the field and 36 percent (11-30) from 3-point range. 
Barry was lead by Kiara Palmer and Barbara Cousiño with 12 points a piece.  Andersson added 10 points and five rebounds for the Bucs. Barry was 30 percent from the field and 28 percent (8-28) from 3-point range. 
Next up for Union is the final game of the classic, Saturday, November 11 at 4:00 p.m. versus Nova Southeastern.
