Union men's soccer tops AUM 5-3

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University men's soccer team posted a 5-3 win over Auburn University-Montgomery at Smith Soccer Complex. Union, winners of three of their last four games, improved to 3-7 on the season and 3-4 in the Gulf South Conference. AUM dropped to 0-12 on the season and 0-5 in league play.

Union took early control with a pair of goals in the first 23 minutes of play. William Valencia scored first on assists from Andre Silva and Daniel Bile in the 18th minute. Robel Dent scored in the 23rd minute on an assists from Cole Asfour

In the 35th minute, a Union foul in the box set up a penalty kick for AUM and Tiuri Schieving made good on the shot. Just six minutes later, AUM tied the match on a goal from Simon Van Rheeden. 

The match was knotted 2-2 at the half. Union held a slim shots advantage over AUM in the first half 12-10, including 5-4 in shots on goal. 

In the second half, Union again scored first on a goal from Miguel Vilas in the 68th minute, assisted by AJ Morgado. But in the 77th minute, AUM answered  to even the score with a goal from Sverrir Smarason, assisted by Rheeden. 

After Union had a couple of goals waved off because of offsides, the Bulldogs went ahead for the final time in the 85th minute on Velencia's second goal of the match. He was assisted by Henrique Loureiro. Union added a final insurance goal int he 88th minute when Bile broke free and took a Silva pass for the fifth and final goal. 

Union outshot AUM 14-11 in the second half (26-21 for the game). Union had a total of 13 shots on goal to six for AUM. 

Dent led Union with seven shots, while Valencia added six and Silva five. Casper Nyberg recorded 13 saves in the win. 

AUM was led by Rheeden with six shots and Jesus Escalera with four shots. Goalie Justin Presor had six saves. 

Up next for Union will be a pair of road GSC matches with the first stop being Friday, October 13 at West Alabama.
