JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University women's soccer team lost 2-0 to the University of West Florida at Smith Soccer Complex. The match was the final home match of the 2017 season. Union fell to 4-10 on the season and 4-9 in the Gulf South Conference. West Florida improved to 12-3-1 overall and 9-2-1 in league play.
After advancing to the GSC Tourney last season for the first time, Union will miss this year's tournament. West Florida had already clinched a spot in the tourney prior to today's match.
West Florida outshot Union 6-0 in the first half, however, the match was scoreless until just before halftime. With 52 seconds left in the first half, West Florida won a corner kick and converted with Leonie Kreil scored on a loose ball.
In the second half, West Florida dominated the shots, 19-2, making the game total 25-2. West Florida also managed a 12-1 different in shots on goal.
The Argos added an insurance goal, again scoring late the half. With just under nine minutes left, Deneisha Blackwood took a pass from Shantell Thompson and found the back of the net.
Kristen Francis recorded 10 saves for Union, while Kately Burkhart had one save in the shutout win.
Union's Brooke Watson had the only two shots for the Lady Bulldogs, one was on goal. Thompson led West Florida with seven shots.
Up next for Union will be the final game of the season when the Lady Bulldogs play at Christian Brothers, Thursday, October 26 at 5 p.m.
