LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The Union University men's soccer team dropped a road match at the University of West Alabama Friday night 3-1. Union fell to 3-5 overall, while West Alabama improved to 3-3. This match was a non-conference regular season match, despite the two teams being members of the Gulf South Conference. The next meeting, October 9 at Union, will serve as the conference match.
West Alabama scored first when a shot from Harrison Roberts found the back of the net in the 28
th minute of play. Clay Green had the assist as the Tigers took the 1-0 lead.
Union wasted no time in tying the match when just 25 seconds later,
Cole Asfour scored his second goal of the season. The score stayed 1-1 for the remainder of the first half.
Then in the second half, West Alabama put the match away when Clay Green scored on a penalty kick in the 51
st minute of play to give his team the lead. A handball against Union in the box led to the PK for the Tigers. Just over two minutes later, Green struck again with is second goal of the day and third of the season to set the score at 3-1. Neither team scored for the final 38 minutes of play.
West Alabama outshot Union 19-8, including 12-5 in shots on goal. Union split their goalie time with Peter Haniel allowing one goal with six saves in the first half.
Igor Luczensky allowed two goals and had three saves in the second half. Louis allowed just the one goal for West Alabama in his 90 minutes in net with four saves.
Up next for Union will be the first of four straight home matches, Friday, September 30 versus Shorter University at 7:15 p.m.
