JACKSON, Tennessee- The Union University baseball team took the final game of their Gulf South Conference series with Alabama Huntsville 9-2 on Sunday afternoon.
Neither team got on the board in the first two innings, but it was the Bulldogs that got on the board scoring five runs in the bottom of the third. The first run of the inning came on an RBI infield single from
Tyler Mauzy followed by another RBI single from
Dylan Moore and pushed another run across thanks to an error by the UAH pitcher allowing Mauzy to come home on the play. Union capped off the big inning with an RBI double to right field pushing home both Roper and Moore to lead 5-0.
The Bulldogs put up another two runs in the bottom of the fourth with
Zach Phillips scoring after another error by the Charger defense on a bunt from
Austin Orr. The second run of the inning came in on another RBI single off of the bat of Mauzy to push the lead to 7-0.
Alabama Huntsville scored in the next half inning when Zach Dugas launched a home run to deep left center field.
The Bulldogs put their final runs on the board in the bottom of the seventh when
Ryne Roper hit his first long ball of the year to left field followed by and RBI groundout by
Matthew Duncan that scored Holbrook from third to set the final at 9-1.
Skyler Harrison started the game for Union and was just two outs away from the complete game going 8.1 innings giving up only two runs on five hits before being relieved by
Joe Hudson who tossed the final two outs of the ballgame.
Ryne Roper had the hot bat at the plate for Union hitting his first home run of the year going 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.
Hayden Lewis also continued his hot streak going 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. Every batter in the Union lineup had either a run scored or an RBI in the win.
Union travels to Harding on Tuesday to take on the Bisons at 3:00 p.m.
