JACKSON, Tennessee- The Union University baseball team fell 10-4 in the rubber game with Valdosta State Sunday afternoon to fall to 8-6 in Gulf South Conference play.
Union jumped out to the early lead when
Zach Phillips led off the game with a triple and was driven in on a ground ball to the second basemen from
Tyler Mauzy.
After being held scoreless in the game, the Blazers got their first lead of the game in the top of the fourth inning scoring six runs on four hits, including a homerun, combined with four walks from the Union pitching staff. Valdosta State stretched their lead to 7-1 in the next inning pushing a run across after leading the frame off with a triple.
Union managed to cut the lead to four in the bottom half of the fifth after leading off the inning with back to back singles that scored on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly from Phillips.
The Blazers added two more runs in the top of the eighth and one in the ninth that put their total at 10 runs on the afternoon. Union added a run in the bottom of the eighth when
Caleb DeMarigny came in to score after a bases loaded walk from Mauzy.
Joe Hudson started the game on the mound for his first start of the season going 3.2 innings, but gave up six runs on five hits.
Matthew Pickard came into the game in relief in the fourth inning tossing 1.1 innings while
Skyler Harrison threw the final 4.0 innings striking out four batters.
Union hosts Harding on Tuesday afternoon in single game starting at 2:00 p.m.
