MEMPHIS, Tennessee- The Union University baseball team took the third game of their Gulf South Conference series with Christian Brothers Sunday afternoon 4-2 to complete the series sweep. The Bulldogs move to 5-1 in GSC play and 11-3 overall on the season.
Union got on the board first in the top of the fifth inning after loading the bases with a single, a hit by pitch and a walk.
Zach Wylie came in to score on a wild pitch on the next at bat to give Union the 1-0 lead. Later in the inning,
Tyler Mauzy came to the plate and singled through the left side of the infield that scored
Austin Orr and
Nolen Milton to push the lead to 3-0.
The Bucs were quick to answer the Union rally in the bottom half of the fifth with a double and triple coming back-to-back followed by a sacrifice fly to open the inning and cut the Union lead to one, 3-2.
Union came through with an insurance run in the top of the ninth when Mauzy notched his third RBI of the afternoon driving home Milton on a single to right field that set the final at 4-2.
Skyler Harrison earned his third win of the season tossing 6.0 innings giving up just two runs on three hits with three stikeouts.
Matthew Pickard finished the game in relief going 3.0 innings without giving up a run and just two hits with three strikeouts as well to earn his first save of his career.
Union returns home next weekend to take on Delta State in another GSC series with a double header at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday and the third game taking place on Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
