JACKSON, Tenn. - The No. 10 Union University women's basketball team posted a 96-56 win over Christian Brothers University on senior night at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. Union improved to 26-2 overall and 20-2 in the Gulf South Conference. Christian Brothers dropped to 11-15 on the season and 9-13 in league play.
Union shot 68 percent from the field in the first half, including 84 percent (11-13) from 3-point range.
Union opened the game with three pointers from Chelsea Bodiford and Kelsey Risner to lead 6-0. Jada Perkins hit a three a few possessions late to put Union up 11-2 with 7:24 left in the quarter. Union's lead hit double figures on a 3-pointer from Tiffany Rechis as Union led 21-10 with 3:02 left in the quarter. Union stretched their first half lead to 30 points three different times, before taking a 53-27 lead into the locker room.
The Lady Bulldogs continued their hot shooting in the second half. After both teams scored buckets on their first possessions of the half, Union posted a 20-0 run capped by a Risner 3-pointer as Union extended their lead to 46 points, 75-29 with 4:06 left in the third quarter. Union's largest lead of the game was 48 points, 85-37. Union cruised down the stretch for 96-56 win.
Union put six players in double figures led by Bodifod with 15 points on 5-of-5 shooting from long range. Tiara Caldwell added 14 points and nine rebounds. Rechis added 14 points with four 3-pointers. Jada Perkins and Jada Smith each added 13 points, while Smith led with nine assists. Risner, Union's lone senior, scored 12 points on 4-of-4 shooting from behind the arc. Union shot 60 percent form the field, 68 percent from behind the arc and made all 11 free throws.
Christian Brothers was led by Reeves with 16 points and Schaefer with 14 points. The Lady Bucs shot 36 percent from the field, 24 percent (6-25) from 3-point range and 71 percent (10-14) form the free throw line.
Up next for Union will be the quarterfinals of the GSC Tournament as the top-seeded Lady Bulldogs host No. 8 seed West Georgia Tuesday, March 1 at 6:00 p.m.
