Bulldogs come up short against Blazers

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University men's basketball team fell to Valdosta State 96-72 Saturday afternoon in Gulf South Conference action.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Union opened the game with five straight points, including baskets from Charlie Wilson and Tray Boyd, but Valdosta State rallied back with five straight of their own to tie the game. The Blazers kept the momentum for the rest of the half going up by as many as 27 on the Bulldogs including a 25-4 run early in the half. 
  • The Bulldogs gained some ground in the second half cutting the deficit to 17 points thanks to a 10-2 run capitalized by a dunk from Ashanti Day.
  • Valdosta State was able to add to their large lead going up by 35 points with just under five minutes left in the game. Union was not able to make a comeback and would fall 96-72.


TEAM STATS
  • Despite the loss, Union shot 42 percent from the field but went 6-for-21 from behind the arc. The Bulldogs had 38 chances from the charity stripe but only managed to convert on 20 of those shots.
  • Union was out-rebounded 39-27 in the game and gave up 54 points in the paint to VSU.
  • The Blazers shot 58 percent from the field and 92 percent from the free throw line.



PLAYER STATS
  • Ashanti Day led the way for the Bulldogs with 15 points and eight rebounds while KC Goodwin and Nick Velasquez added 12 points each.
  • Goodwin also led the Bulldogs with five assists in the matchup.
  • Valdosta State was led by Saadiq Muhammed with 20 points and Jeremiah Hill added 18.

 
UP NEXT
The Bulldogs take a 14 day break for the Christmas holiday before getting back to Gulf South Conference action on New Year's Eve at Delta State.
