Union women defeat Nova Southeastern 75-65 in top-25 matchup

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The No. 19 Union University women's basketball team posted a 75-65 at No. 23 Nova Southeastern University Saturday afternoon to close out the SSC/GSC Crossover Challenge.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Union opened the game with a 10-0 run versus No. 23 Nova Southeastern and led by as many as 15-2 early. Much like the previous day's 16-0 start in a 98-64 win over Barry. 
  • Nova, playing on their home floor, settled in and started to chip away at Union's lead. Over a period of the next 10 minutes of game time, Nova outscored Union 25-10 to take a 27-25 lead with four minutes left in the half. 
  • Union answered back to lead 32-27, but held just a 32-31 lead at the half. 
  • Union started the the second half with back-to-back baskets to lead 36-31. But again, Nova responded and led by as many as 49-44 in the final minute of the third quarter.
  • Nova led 51-47 to start the fourth quarter. Union responded to tie the game 53-53. The game was tied four more times in the fourth quarter, the final time at 61-61 with 4:30 left. Union took over with 10-0 run and led 71-61 with 49 second left. Union's biggest in the second half was 75-63 before taking the 10-point win. 

STAT OF THE GAME
Union started the game on a 15-2 run and outscored Nova 17-10 in the first quarter. Union closed the game on a 14-4 run and outscored Nova 28-14 in the fourth quarter.  

TEAM STATS
  • Union shot 50 percent from the field, 40 percent (4-10) from long range and 76 percent (25-33) from the free throw line. 
  • Nova Southeastern shot 39 percent from the field, 17 percent (5-30) from 3-point range and 80 percent (4-of-5) from the free throw line. 
  • Nova Southeastern out rebounded Union 39-34. 

PLAYER STATS
  • Union was led by Smith with 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds and four assists. Jada Perkins scored 15 points with seven rebounds and three assists. Fredi Nielsen had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Bodiford and Sara Lytle both added nine points each, while Rechis had eight points and Bethany Lytle had five points. All seven players that played for Union scored.
  • Nova was led by Samantha Logan and Katie Barnard with 15 points each. Logan added 12 rebounds for the double-double and Christen Prasse scored 14 points.
