No. 19 Union women roll in opener, 98-64 over Barry

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 19 Union University women's basketball opened the 2016-17 season with a 98-64 win over Barry University in the SSC/GSC Crossover Classic hosted by Nova Southeastern University.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Union jumped out to a big lead right from tip off going up 16-0 over Barry in the first seven minutes of the game. Five different Lady Bulldogs scored in the opening quarter led by Fredi Nielsen with five points.
  • The Lady Bulldogs rattled off another 12-0 run to open up the second quarter, putting Union up 37-8.
  • Barry and Union played almost even over the closing minutes of the first half with Barry outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 18-17. Union went to the locker room up  54-29.
  • The Lady Bulldogs shot 63.3% from the field in the first half going 21-33 and hit eight three pointers out of 15 chances from behind the arc.
  • Union outscored Barry 44-35 in the second half to cruise to the 98-64 victory. 
  • Union's largest lead of the game was by 46 points with just over eight minutes left in the fourth quarter.

STAT OF THE GAME
Union had five players in double figures led by Jada Smith with 23 points. It was her third highest point total in college (26, 25 both as a freshman).

  • Union shot 61 percent form the field, 41 percent (11-27) from long range and 82 percent (9-11) from the free throw line.
  • Union out rebounded Barry 36-32 in the game. 
  • Barry shot 39 percent from the field, 33 percent (8-24) from 3-point range and 57 percent (8-14) from the charity stripe. 

PLAYER STATS
  • Smith led Union with a game-high 23 points, shooting 10-of-12 from the field. 
  • Sara Lytle added 17 points and was 6-of-8 shooting. 
  • Jada Perkins scored 13 points and had eight assists. 
  • Fredi Nielsen scored 12 points with nine rebounds, while Tiffany Rechis scored 11 points with three 3-pointers. 
  • Kiara Palmer led Barry with 22 points and nine rebounds.
