Seniors shine in Union volleyball’s 3-1 win over UWA

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University volleyball team posted a 3-1 (25-22, 25-21, 27-25, 25-22) win over the University of West Alabama. Seniors Deja Moorer (22 kills), McKenna Carter (six blocks, nine kills) and Hannah Huguley (career high 53 assists) led the way for Union.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Neither team led by more than a single point until Union bolted from a 9-9 tie to lead 15-11. Union held their largest lead at 19-12. West Alabama rallied but Union got a kill from Suheily Colon-Rodriguez to win 25-22. 
  • Union was finally able to extend a lead out to 20-15 after a close set early. Union answered a 3-0 run by West Alabama with four straight points to move to set point, 24-18. A kill from Union's Hannah Huguley stopped a 3-0 run from West Alabama and gave Union the 25-21.
  • Union led 14-9 midway through the set, but West Alabam responded to take a 22-21 lead. UWA kept the momentum and pushed out to set point, 24-21. A kill from McKenna Carter and two from Deja Moorer tied the set at 24-24 for Union. The teams swapped points, before West Alabama stayed alive with the 27-25 win.
  • After trailing 8-5 early, Union responded to go up 20-13 in the fourth set. West Alabama cut the deficit to 23-21, before a kill from Rodriguez set up Union with match point, 24-21. Moorer ended the match with a kill, her 22nd of the night.
 
STAT OF THE GAME
Moorer recorded 22 kills in the match, a season high. Her career high of 24 kills came as a sophomore at Union, also against West Alabama. Moorer needs just 11 kills in Friday's final match of the season to reach 1,000 for her career. 
 
POSTMATCH STATS
  • Union led West Alabama in kills, 62-49 and hit .213 for the match. Both teams were even in blocks with nine. Union led 5-2 in service aces. 
  • Rodriguez joined Moorer in double figure kills with 11 for the night. Both players hit over .375 in the match. 
  • Huguley posted a career high 53 assists in the match. Audrey Cagle added 22 digs, while Carter led with six blocks. Christa Karns added five blocks.
UP NEXT
Union plays their final match of the season, Friday, November 11 at 7 p.m. versus West Georgia. This will be senior night for Hannah Huguley, Deja Moorer, McKenna Carter and Patsy Decker.
