Union men’s soccer tops Delta State 2-1

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Union University men's soccer team posted a 2-1 win at Delta State University. Union is currently in sixth place in the GSC standings with one conference game remaining. Union closes out GSC play with a home match versus Christian Brothers October 23. Only the top six teams advance to the GSC Tournament.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • The first half was drawing to a close with neither team able to score when Union finally broke through with a goal from Daniel Bile in the 43rd minute of play.
  • Union outshot DSU 10-3 in the first 45 minutes and led 1-0 at the half.
  • Delta State was able to quickly tie the match 1-1 with a goal just five minutes into play in the second half on a goal from Brock Hollier.
  • Then, in the 65th minute, Union freshman Cole Asfour scored the game winner, assisted by Paul Langford.
 
STAT OF THE GAME
  • Reigning GSC Freshman of the Week, Asfour recorded his fourth goal of the season, putting him one goal behind Langford for the team lead. Also, three of Asfour's four goals have been game-winning goals, a team best.
 
POSTMATCH STATS
  • Union outshot DSU 17-12 in the match, including 5-3 in on-goal shots. Igor Luczensky recorded two saves for Union, while Jacob Hauenstein had three saves for Delta State.
  • Bile led Union with four shots in the match. 
  • This win for Union snapped a two match losing skid to the Statemen. Union has won three of the first four meetings.
 
UP NEXT
Union will host Christian Brothers, October 23 at 4:30 p.m. in their final GSC regular season match. Union will need to maintain at least a sixth place spot in the standings to advance to the GSC Tournament. Union (3-5) currently sits two points ahead of seventh place Alabama Huntsville (2-3-1). Union is also just one point behind fifth place Lee (3-2-1). Union holds the tie-breaker over UAH, but not Lee.
