Union men’s soccer drops season opener 5-1

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University men's soccer team fell 5-1 to Florida Tech Friday night in their home opener. It was the season opener for both teams.
 
Florida Tech wasted no time in taking early control with a goal from Jan Hlavica, assisted by Trey Collins at the 3:56 mark. The Panthers added a second goal just four minutes later on a breakaway from Adin Kavara (Jack Willison assist).
 
Then Union responded at the 9:22 mark on a goal from Zac Fletcher, assisted by Rodrigo Zonta. It was a shot from the right side that glanced off the keepers glove and found the back of the net.
 
In the 27th minute, Florida Tech went back up by two goals when Kavara scored his second goal of the night with assists coming from Christian Stewart and Willison. The Panthers led 3-1 at the half.
 
Then just 47 seconds into the second half, Florida Tech scored again as Willison continued his great night getting an assist from Evan Enders. The final goal for Florida Tech game as Collins scored on an open goal.
 
Florida Tech outshot Union 12-9 in the game, 8-3 in shots on goal. Union held the 6-4 shot advantage in the second half. Panther keeper Mitch Thorn record two saves, while Union's Taylor Smith had three saves. Zonta led Union with three shots.
 
Up next for Union will be a road game September 6 at noon at Southern Indiana.
