Union women’s soccer edges West Florida 1-0 for first win

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University women's soccer team earned the first win of the 2015 season in a 1-0 victory over the University of West Florida. Union improved to 1-6 on the season and 1-0 in the Gulf South Conference. West Florida dropped to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in league play.

Union head coach Isaac Brooks said, "We've played a tough non-conference schedule and our girls have had to fight hard, even through the losses. That is why we won this game tonight because they fought hard for 90 minutes."

Union scored the lone goal of the game just five and a half minutes into play. Kelsey Wilkes scored on a rebound on a shot from Honeye Heydari to put Union up 1-0. Union had just missed on an earlier scoring chance.

West Florida controlled possession for the majority of the match out shooting Union 20-8, including 16-5 in the first half. West Florida led Union 11-2 in shots on goal.

Despite being outshot, Union's defense played a bend-but-don't-break style. Union goalie Kristen Francis was busy for Union in net by recording 11 saves in the match. One of Francis' final saves of the night was hard kicked ball where she converted a diving save to preserve the shutout.

Union's Heydari led with four shots while Kayleigh Patterson and Wilkes had one shot each.

West Florida had four players with at least three shots, led by Amber Pennybaker with four shots. Emily Grammer recorded West Florida's only save.

Up next for Union will be final of four straight home matches when they host Spring Hill (Ala.) September 26 at 1 p.m.
