Union volleyball rallies again for third straight win

CLINTON, Miss. – The Union University Lady Bulldogs pulled off a second straight come-from-behind win, this time at Mississippi College 3-2 (24-26, 20-25, 25-22, 26-24, 15-9). This was Union's third straight win, improving their record to 3-5 overall and 2-0 in the Gulf South Conference. Mississippi College dropped to 1-9 overall and 0-2 in the GSC. 

This three match winning streak marks the first such streak since the 2011 season.

"Once again we did not play our best volleyball by any means, junior hitter Deja Moore said. "We showed that we are not a team that gives up anymore. And we will continue to improve and work to finish games."

Saturday's win at Mississippi College marked the second straight win for Union after trailing two sets to none. Union won at Christian Brothers Friday 3-2 after being down 2-0 and facing match point in set three and set five. 

The first set was a tough loss for the Lady Bulldogs. Union led the Lady Choctaws early, but could not hold their momentum. Union and Mississippi College were tied 24-24 and two attacking errors by the Lady Bulldogs gave the Lady Choctaws the set win.

Mississippi College kept their energy going into the second set. Union was facing set point at 24-17. The Lady Bulldogs scored three straight points to pull to within four points, but a kill by the Lady Choctaws sealed their second win of the match.

The Lady Bulldogs were not going to go down without a fight. In the third set, Union was down 16-12 when the Lady Bulldogs used a 5-0 run to go up a one point. The Lady Bulldogs led 23-22 when a kill by Christa Karns and service ace by Courtney Masters got Union their first set win of the night.

The fourth set went in Union's favor. The Lady Bulldogs and Lady Choctaws kept the score close the whole game. Union found themselves tied at 24-24 for the second time of the night. This time the Lady Bulldogs took the set win.

For two consecutive nights, the Lady Bulldogs came from behind to force a decisive fifth set. Union and Mississippi College kept the set close early. Leading by one point, the Lady Bulldogs went on a 6-0 run to extend the lead to 12-5. The Lady Choctaws started to battle back scoring two points, but Union answered with two points of their own. The Lady Bulldogs won the match with a 15-9 set win.

Union head coach Darrin McClure said, "I will always take a win, but I am really not happy with our inconsistency. This team has potential and until we reach that potential, I am not going to let them be satisfied. If we want to  be a good team, we have a lot of work to do."

Hannah Huguley led Union with 46 assists, and Ceciley Blanchard led with 18 kills. Courtney Masters had 11 digs to help the Lady Bulldogs get their third consecutive win.
Next up for Union is a home match against the Shorter University Lady Hawks September 22.
