JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University softball completed the regular season with a sweep over the University of West Georgia. After winning 3-0 Saturday night, Union posted a double-header sweep Sunday afternoon, 7-2 and 4-3. Union improved to 31-17 overall and 17-15 in the Gulf South Conference. West Georgia dropped to 16-31 overall and 9-22 in league play.
In the first season of NCAA DII and GSC active membership, Union softball has qualified for the GSC Championship Tournament this week in Valdosta, Ga. Union will enter the six team tournament as the No. 5 seed and will play their first game Thursday, April 30.
Game 1 (Union 7, West Georgia 2)
West Georgia scored first with a run in the first and added a second run in the third on a home from fro Corbin. Union responded with a run in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Reagan Schrader singled to drive in
Emily Bennett. Union scored four times in the fifth inning. Bennett had an RBI double to start the scoring.
Summer Cross drove in
Madison Tennyson from third on a fielder's choice. Schrader added two more runs with a single. Union tacked two more runs in the game when Tennyson hit her first home run of the season in the sixth inning.
Kelly Robey (27-12) won the game, tossing seven innings and allowing two runs on nine hits with 15 strikeouts. Bennett and Schrader led Union with two hits each, while Schrader led with three RBI and Tennyson with two.
Game 2 (Union 4, West Georgia 3)
Union continued their offensive production from game one as
Reagan Schrader hit a solo home run in the first inning. Union added two more runs in the third inning. Cross drove in Tennyson on a sacrifice bunt followed by Bennett scoring on a wild pitch. West Georgia got on the board in the sixth with a run. Union answered that run with a single tally in the bottom of the sixth inning to lead 4-1. Bennett walked with the bases loaded to drive in
Whitney Christian for the eventual game-winning run. West Georgia loaded the bases in the top of the seventh with no outs. The Wolves scored two, but Robey was able to strike out the final two batters to seal the win. Robey won her third game of the series with her third complete game. She allowed three runs on 10 hits with nine strikeouts.
Union managed just five hits in the game, from five different players, but took advantage of five walks dished out by West Georgia. Bennett, Cross and Schrader each added one RBI.
Up next for Union will be the first round of the GSC Tournament. Union will open Thursday, April 30 at 11:30 a.m. central time versus #4 seeded Shorter (Ga.).
