LAKELAND, Fla. – The Union University men's basketball team fell 73-59 to No. 12 Barry (Fla.) University Saturday in the opening round of the 2015 NCAA DII National Tournament South Region. Union, seeded 7
th in the region, ended their season 20-11. Second seeded Barry improved to 25-5 on the year.
Not expected to do much in their first full season of NCAA DII and Gulf South Conference play, Union not only finished tied for fourth in the GSC regular season, but advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament. In addition, Union earned a bid to the NCAA DII National Tournament for the first time since 1968. Union spent the last 47 years in a successful membership in the NAIA.

Corieon Pearson commented about his team's breakout season saying, "I am very proud, it is a testament to this group of guys and that we were able to stick together and accomplish things that no one outside of our program thought we could."
Union struggled to get things going from the very beginning, falling behind 14-2 in the first eight minutes of the game against the high powered Barry offense. The Bulldogs went 1-for-9 from the field in the first eight minutes. After falling behind, Union found their stride through the remaining minutes of the first half. Union went into the locker room having cut the deficit down to just 34-27.
After the break, Union kept the momentum on their side in the opening minutes. After a layup from
Marterrace Brock at the 19:09 mark, Union was back within five points. Both teams traded blows for the next nine minutes of play when
Ashanti Day made a free throw to keep the Barry lead at just five points with 10:40 left to play.
Union lost their hot hand, making just 2-of-9 shots over the next five minutes. Meanwhile Barry pushed their lead to 19, 67-48, with 3:56 left to play. The lead proved to be too much for the Bulldogs as they pulled as close at the final margin of 14 points.
Roy Bullock led the Bulldogs with 16 points going 7-for-9 from the field with five assists. Brock finished the game with 15 points and
Felipe Rocha had 10. Union shot 40.6 percent from the field and just 20.8 percent from behind the arc.
Yunio Barrueta had a double-double with 16 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Bucs. Anders Haas and Jevoni Robinson each added 12 points of their own. Barry finished the game shooting 50.8 percent from the field and 32 percent from 3-point range.
