CLINTON, Miss. – The Union University women's basketball team, ranked No. 9 in the nation, stayed perfect on the season with a 74-59 win at Mississippi College. Union moved to 9-0 on the season and 3-0 in the Gulf South Conference. Mississippi College dropped to 2-3 on the season and 0-3 in league play.
Senior guard
Kelsey Risner played all 40 minutes in the contest for Union. She led the way with a double-double, posting game highs with 16 points and 17 rebounds, while making 4-of-5 three pointers.
Mississippi College jumped out to the early 7-3 lead in front of the home crowd. However, Union got things going quickly after that slow start, running off an 11-1 run over the four minutes to lead by six. Union led 16-12 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, Union pushed their lead out to as many as 17 points, 38-21, before taking a 38-24 lead into the half.
In the third quarter, Mississippi College got as close as seven points, before Union quickly regained the 14 point advantage. In the fourth quarter, Union went up by as many as 20 points four different times, before taking the 74-59 win. Neither team scored in the final 1:46 of the game. Union did not score for the final 3:52 of the game.
Union dominated the glass, outrebounded MC 46-32, including 23-8 on the offensive glass. Union scored 19 second chance points and took 72 shots in the game, 24 more than the Choctaws.
For Union, three other players joined Risner in double figures including
Tiara Caldwell with 14 points,
Tiffany Rechis with 11 points and
Jada Smith with 10 points. Smith led with six assists. Union shot 40 percent from the field, 39 percent (9-23) from long range and 50 percent (7-14) from the free throw line.
Mississippi College was led by Kristen Sampson with 16 points. Chloe Roberts added 13 points and Toni Woods finished with 11. Sampson was the top rebounded for the home team with eight. The Choctaws shot 42 percent from the field, 38 percent (6-16) from behind the arc and 68 percent (13-19) from the free throw line.
