BATON ROUGE, La.- The Union University Lady Bulldogs fell to Louisiana State by the score of 88-57 in an exhibition game to start the 2015-16 season.Coming off of a Sweet Sixteen appearance in their first season eligible for NCAA postseason play, the Lady Bulldogs struck first when freshman guard
Jada Perkins drove up the middle for the layup. The Lady Tigers quickly got on the board and raddled off eight unanswered points of their own to take the 8-2 lead. Union's
Chelsea Bodiford got the Lady Bulldogs back on track with a three pointer from the corner. Later in the quarter, LSU regained a six point advantage with before Bodiford hit another three by shaking off the defender and a free throw from Perkins got the Lady Bulldogs within two. However, LSU would end the quarter with a seven point lead, 25-18.
Union scored first once again in the second quarter with yet another three from Bodiford.
Kelsey Risner hit another three with 5:28 in the half to bring Union to within three points of the Lady Tigers. LSU then hit their stride from behind the arc with four straight threes to close out the half with a 11 point advantage, 47-36.
LSU pulled away in the third quarter going on a 12-0 run following a layup from Perkins to begin the half. Union finally broke the Lady Tiger run with a layup from
Tiffany Rechis the set the score at 59-40 in favor of LSU. Risner hit another three with 3:12 left in the quarter but LSU scored nine more points to finish out the half with a 68-47 lead.
Following the game, Head Coach
Mark Campbell said that playing games against tough opponents gives his team "an experience that helps us mature as a team."
Union traded points with the Lady Tigers through the first five minutes of the fourth quarter with Rechis and Risner both hitting threes for the Lady Bulldogs. LSU closed the door in the final minutes of the ballgame with a 11-0 setting the final at 88-57.
Up next for Union will be the home opener of the 2015-16 campaign when the face off against Rhodes Saturday, November 10th, at 4:00 p.m. for Homecoming. The following day the Lady Bulldogs will face another SEC team in Kentucky in Lexington, Ky. on November 8th at 5:00 p.m.
