JACKSON, Tenn. – The Lady Bulldog volleyball team was defeated by the University of West Alabama Lady Tigers 3-1 (25-27, 25-14, 25-13, 25-20). West Alabama improved to 6-10 on the season and have a 4-5 conference record. Union dropped to 4-11 overall and 3-6 in conference play.
The first set was the lone win for the Lady Bulldogs. Union started off strong, getting ahead 3-0 early in the set. The Lady Bulldogs were ahead 7-6 when the Lady Tigers went on a 4-0 run pushing ahead by three points. Union answered with their own four point run jumping ahead 11-10. West Alabama and the Lady Bulldogs held tight for the rest of the set. Union was facing set point at 24-22, but fought back to tie the score at 24-24. The Lady Tigers got back possession of the ball, but were only able to score one point. The Lady Bulldogs regained possession at 25-24, and scored three points to get the dramatic set win.
The second and third sets were tough for Union. The Lady Bulldogs could not find their momentum. In the second set, West Alabama jumped ahead 11-4. The Lady Tigers pulled away even more by the end of the set, winning it 25-14. The third set was the same story for Union. West Alabama continued their dominant play, taking the third set 25-13.
The Lady Bulldogs found some fire in the fourth set. After being down 12-5, Union scored four consecutive points to get within striking distance of the Lady Tigers. West Alabama broke serve, but was unable to maintain possession of the ball. Union scored two points on their next possession bringing the score to 13-11. Later in the set, the Lady Tigers started to pull away again leading the Lady Bulldogs 20-15. Union broke serve, and went on a 4-0 run to make the score 20-19. The Lady Bulldogs could not maintain their momentum. West Alabama made a late run to take the set win at 25-20 and the match win.
Deja Moorer led Union with 12 kills on the night.
Elise Seufert had 17 digs, and
Hannah Huguley had 32 assists for the Lady Bulldogs. The Lady Tigers were led by Briana Sandifer with 16 kills, Callie Murphy with 23 assists, and Murphy added five service aces to get the win.
Union will be at home again October 10 when they take on the University of West Georgia Wolves at 2pm.
