FLORENCE, Ala. – The Union volleyball team was shutout 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-7) at the University of North Alabama October 31. The Lady Bulldogs fell to 7-9 in Gulf South Conference play and 8-17 on the season. Union is currently ranked seventh in the GSC standings, and only the top six teams will be eligible for conference tournament. The Lady Lions improved to 21-6 on the season, and have a GSC record of 14-2. UNA is ranked third in the GSC standings.
North Alabama came out of the gate with a 4-0 run in the first set. The Lady Bulldogs started to make a slow comeback after they broke serve. UNA led by two when Union scored three straight points to take the lead at 9-8. The Lady Lions broke serve, and took back the lead 10-9. The Lady Bulldogs got back possession and scored two points of their own to take back the lead 11-10. North Alabama answered Union once again scoring on a service error by
Sarah McAlister and a double block by Andrea De Leon and Jessica Austin bringing the score to 12-11 in favor of UNA. The Lady Bulldogs tied the score at 12-12 with a service error by the Lady Lions. Then, North Alabama started to pull away from Union after regaining possession of the ball. Down 19-15, the Lady Bulldogs scored four points by way of three attacking errors by the Lady Lions and a kill by
Ceciley Blanchard to tie North Alabama 19-19. UNA called a timeout, and came back out with a 6-0 run to take the first set 25-19.
Union started on top in the second set 2-1, but was unable to keep the lead. North Alabama took the lead early and slowly pulled away from the Lady Bulldogs the rest of the set. UNA took the set 25-17. The third set was all North Alabama. The Lady Lions led Union, at one point, 13-1, and continued their dominant play. North Alabama only allowed the Lady Bulldogs to score 7 times the whole third set.
McKenna Carter had three blocks for the Lady Bulldogs while
Elise Seufert added 11 digs.
Deja Moorer led Union with six kills. UNA was led by Lexie Bradley with 14 kills, Jessica Austin with seven total blocks, and Andrea De Leon with 24 assists.
The Lady Bulldogs will play the University of West Florida November 6 at 7pm and Valdosta State University November 7 at 12pm for their last home conference series of the year. Union will honor their lone senior,
Elise Seufert, November 7 for the last home game of her career.
