JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University men's soccer team dropped two games this weekend on their road trip. Union lost 1-0 at Shorter (Ga.) University and then fell 2-1 at No. 11 Lee University. Union dropped to 5-9-1 on the season and 2-5-1 in the Gulf South Conference.
After a scoreless first half in the loss at Shorter, the Hawks scored the game's only goal in the 69th minute on a shot fro Nico Stutley. Shorter outshot Union 14-13 in the match but had the clear advantage in shots on goal 7-2.
Andre Silva led Union with seven shots while
Clayton Martin added two. Both recorded Union's only two shots on goal. Matt Kessler had six saves and just one goal allowed in the tough loss.
In the 3-1 loss at No. 11 Lee, the Flames scored twice in the first half to lead 2-0 at the break. Their goals came from Guade Marinell in the 16th minutes and Jose Orellana in the 28th minutes. David Perez had the assist on Marinell's goal. Union got on the board just after halftime in the 53rd minute on a goal from
Zac Fletcher, assisted by Martin. However, Lee put the game away with an insurance goal in the 72nd minute of play by Arturo Rocha, assisted by Danny Johnston. Silva led Union with six shots. Kesler had six saves in the loss.
Up next for Union will be the final regular season game of the year, Friday, October 30 at Christian Brothers. Union is currently eighth in the standings and only the top six teams advance to the GSC Tournament. However, Union is just two points out of six place and must win Friday and have West Florida lose their match to have a chance to advance.
