JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University volleyball team posted a 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-22) win over Christian Brothers University Thursday evening at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. Union improved to 7-14 overall and 6-6 in the Gulf South Conference. Christian Brothers dropped to 7-15 on the season and 3-9 in league play.
For Union, this was their third straight GSC win, all three coming by way of the 3-0 sweep.
Union opened the match with a 5-0 run including an aces by
Hannah Huguley and a couple of kills from
Ceciley Blanchard. Christian Brothers stopped the run, but Union maintained the control, leading 15-12 and again 17-14. CBU then responded with five straight points to take their first lead, 19-17, forcing a Union timeout. Union then tied the set at 21-21 and again at 22-22. Union took a 23-22 lead forcing a CBU timeout. Union kept the momentum, scoring the last four points of the set for the 25-22 win.
The second set was close from the start. CBU moved ahead 11-8, forcing a Union timeout. Out of the break, Union responded with seven of the next nine points to lead 15-13, forcing a CBU timeout. Union continued with three of the next four points to lead 18-15, followed by the final CBU timeout of the set. Union maintained control and pulled away for the 25-21 win.
In the third set, Union jumped out 2-0 and led 6-2 early. CBU their deficit to 6-5 before Union pulled out to a 12-6 and then 14-7 leads. CBU slowly began to chip away and pulled to within on, 22-21, forcing a Union timeout. Union answered out of the timeout to go up 23-21. After a service error by Union and then an attach error by CBU, Union had match point at 24-22. Union got the match winner on a block from Blanchard and
McKenna Carter.
Union was led by Blanchard with 15 kills, followed by
Deja Moorer with 10 kills.
Hannah Huguley dished out 37 assists, while Moorer and Huguley led with three aces each. Carter led with four blocks and
Elise Seufert added nine digs.
CBU was led by Gillis with nine kills, Reber with 20 assists, Chipman with three aces, Clausen with 11 digs and Miller with four blocks.
Up next for Union will be a home match Friday, October 23 versus Mississippi College at 7 p.m.
