Union falls in double overtime

LIVINGSTON, Alabama- The Union University (2-7, 2-1 GSC) women's soccer team earned their first conference loss of the season with a 2-1 double overtime loss to West Alabama (6-2, 4-0 GSC) Friday night.
The Lady Bulldogs fell behind late in the first half when West Alabama's Chelsea Cummings netted the first goal of the match in the 40th minute. The Tigers would hold the one goal lead into the half, but that lead would not last long after that.
Honeye Heydari tied the score at 1-1 only two minutes into the second half when she scored unassisted in the 48th minute of the match. Union only had one more shot in the half coming from Kayleigh Patterson but managed to hold the score tied for the remainder of regulation.
After forcing overtime play, the Lady Bulldogs had two more shots but could not gain the golden goal forcing the match to a second overtime period. Four minutes into the second overtime, West Alabama scored the golden goal to secure the win and break Union's perfect GSC record.
After being named the GSC Defensive Player of the Week, Union goalkeeper Kristen Francis earned seven more saves for a season total of 49 and third in the GSC.
Union continues their homestretch Sunday at Alabama-Huntsville at 2:00 p.m. and then return home next Friday to host Mississippi College at 5:00 p.m.
