Union volleyball drops 5-set road match at West Georgia

CARROLLTON, Ga. – The Union University volleyball team lost 3-2 (25-21, 26-28, 25-23, 23-25, 15-12) Friday night at the University of West Georgia. Union fell to 3-8 on the season and 1-6 in the Gulf South Conference. West Georgia improved to 3-8 overall and 1-6 in league play.
 
All five sets were close and featured back and forth action through the match. The five sets totaled 36 ties and 14 lead changes overall. The second and third sets alone boasts double-figure ties with 13 and 10 respectively.
 
Union responded to a 1-0 deficit with a 28-26 win the second set. Then after a 25-23 loss in the third set, Union again answered with a 25-23 win to tie the match at 2-2.
 
In the fifth set, one that featured six ties and two lead changes, had Union in control early with leads of 5-3, 806, and 10-7. However, the home Wolves answered and tied the match at 10-10, then 11-11, before taking a 12-11 lead. Union tied the set at 12-12, but three straight points by West Georgia including a service ace on match point ended the match.
 
Union was led by Hannah Huguley with 13 kills and Deja Moorer with 12 kills. Lydia Wright led with 27 assists, while Huguley added a season high 21 assists. Freshman Courtney Masters led with 18 digs, playing for injured libero Elise Seufert. Wright added 12 digs. Mallory Baker, Wright, and Huguley led with two aces each, while Huguley led with five blocks.
 
West Georgia was led by Nikki McDaniel with 14 kills and Tiffany Ancrum with 10 kills. Amanda Miller and Kayla Hartman dished out 20 and 19 assists respectively, while Casey Roethler led with a match-high seven aces. Roethler led with 16 digs and Amanda Miles led with five blocks.
 
Union led West Georgia in kills, 56-49. However, West Georgia was able to recover with the advantage in aces over Union (17-9), and blocks (21-14).
 
Up next for Union is a tri-match with Arkansas Tech University and Trevecca Nazarene University at home, Saturday, September 27 starting at noon.
