Union volleyball splits in home tri-match

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University volleyball team closed out their home tri-match by defeating Trevecca Nazarene University 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-15, 25-14). Union lost the opening match to Arkansas Tech University 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-17). In the other match, Arkansas Tech defeated Trevecca Nazarene 3-0 (25-17, 25-12, 27-25). Union is now 4-9 on the season, Arkansas Tech improved to 10-5 overall, and Trevecca Nazarene dropped to 8-6 overall.
 
In the win over Trevecca, the two teams played close for the first two sets, both scores coming in at 25-22 with each team getting a win. The first two sets combined for 13 ties and five lead changes. The third set started with close play as Trevecca tied the match six times, but never took the lead. With the set tied for the final time at 10-10, Union rolled off a 15-5 run to win the set. In the fourth and final set, Union took the lead for good at 4-3 as they rolled to a 25-14 win.
 
Senior Abbey Wainwright led the way with a match high 15 kills for Union. Lydia Wright had 22 assists and Hannah Huguley has 21 assists. Wright, Huguley, and Courtney Masters led with three aces each. Kristin Cook led with 23 digs, while McKenna Carter led with five blocks.

Wainwright said, "I'm so proud of our team today. We really rallied and played together. We wanted this game and we stayed positive throughout and focused on the task as hand. We took it one play at a time and wer determined to finish strong. It was a total team effort."
 
Trevecca Nazarene was led by Katelyn Atkinson with 12 kills, Loren Bennett added 31 assists, Ashleigh Lozier led with three aces, Atkinson led with 12 digs, and four different players added a block for Trevecca.
 
Union led Trevecca in kills (48-37), aces (13-6), and blocks (11-4).
 
In the loss to Arkansas Tech, Union managed a few early leads in sets one and two. However, Arkansas Tech took control to take the first two sets 25-13 and 25-19. In the third set, Arkansas Tech led for the entire set on their way to a 25-17 win.
 
Union's Savannah Hughes led with six kills. Wright and Huguley led with 13 and 12 assists respectively. Huguley and Masters led with two aces each, wainwright led with nine digs, and Ceciley Blanchard and Carter each had a block.
 
Arkansas Tech was led by Katie Huff with 11 kills. Arkansas Tech led Union in kills (33-27), aces (12-7), and blocks (6-2).
 
Up next for Union will be a road conference match Tuesday, September 30 at Christian Brothers University.
