Fast start not enough for Union volleyball in 3-1 loss

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University volleyball team fell Tuesday night 3-1 (22-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-15) to the University of North Alabama. Union dropped to 3-7 on the season and 1-5 in the Gulf South Conference. North Alabama improved to 7-4 overall and 5-2 in league play.
 
For the fourth time in their six conference matches to this point in the season, Union has led at least 1-0. However, three of those four times have turned into defeats as the Lady Bulldogs could not hold off comebacks from their opponents.
 
Union and North Alabama played a tight first set until Union was able to jump out to a 17-11 lead midway through the set. Union did not trail again in the first set after that point, and held on for the 25-22 win. The second set was even closer with six ties and four lead changes. North Alabama pulled away late in the set for the 25-17 win.
 
The third set played to seven ties and two lead changes with. The set was tied 23-23 before the Lions scored two straight to take the 2-1 lead. In the fourth set, North Alabama never trailed on their way to the 25-15 match clinching win.
 
Union was led by Deja Moorer with 14 kills and Abbey Wainwright with 10. Lydia Wright had 31 assists and led with three blocks. Hannah Huguley led with three aces and Courtney Masters led with nine digs.
 
North Alabama was led by Megan Gorey with 14 kills. Natasha Fomina added 13 kills and Megan Wadsworth had 10 kills. Andrea De Leon led with 43 assists, Joanna Calhoun and Ashtyn Kapovich led with three aces each, Kapovich topped the Lions with 13 digs, and Wadsworth led with four blocks.
 
North Alabama had 53 kills to Union's 39. Union led the blocks 13-11, while North Alabama led in aces 10-8. Union committed 13 service errors to just three from North Alabama.
 
Up next for Union will be a road GSC match Friday, September 26 at West Georgia.
