Box Score LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The Union University women's basketball team posted a 64-46 win at the University of West Alabama Saturday afternoon to close out the regular season. Union improved to 20-6 on the season and 15-5 in the Gulf South Conference. West Alabama dropped to 5-21 overall and 2-18 in league play.
Union finished third in the GSC standings, despite posted a better conference winning percentage this season (15-5) than last season's 13-5 record that was tops in the league. Union will now focus their attention on the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) postseason. Union is in their final season of NCAA DII transition, no yet eligible for GSC or NCAA postseason play. Union will host the NCCAA MidEast Region women's tournament March 13-15.
Union started the game with a 3-pointer from
Kelsey Risner. She scored all 14 points of her points in the first half, making 4-of-6 3-pointers. Union jumped out to an 8-1 lead after just three minutes of play. Union continued to push and led 19-4 following a 3-pointer from
Chelsea Bodiford at the 11:39 mark. Union held their largest lead of the first half, 17 points, with a 25-8 lead at the 8:20 mark. Union managed an 11 points cushion at the half, 31-20.
In the second half, West Alabama cut the deficit to seven points, 34-27, at the 15:21 mark. However, Union quickly pushed the lead back to double figures thanks to an 11-1 run to lead 45-28 with 13:09 to play. West Alabama continued to battle and with 6:26 left in the game, had once again cut the deficit down to single digits, 52-46. But again, Union quickly raced out to their largest lead of the game, the 64-46 final. Union scored the final 14 points of the game.
Union's
Amy Philamlee scored 12 straight points during that last big run for Union, and scored 21 of her game-high 23 points in the second half. Philamlee also posted team-highs with nine rebounds, and four assists. Risner's 14 points was the only other point total in double figures for the Lady Bulldogs. Union shot 51 percent from the field, 46 percent (11-24) from the 3-pont line, and 75 percent (9-12) from the free throw line.
West Alabama was led by Jada Williams with 14 points and Quentinette Odom with nine points. The Tigers shot 31 percent from the field, 25 percent (4-16) from long range, and 62 percent (8-13) from the free throw line.
