Union women earn 67-58 win at North Alabama

FLORENCE, Ala. – The Union University women's basketball team posted a 67-58 win at the University of North Alabama. Union improved to 15-4 on the season and 10-3 in the Gulf South Conference.  North Alabama dropped to 11-7 overall and 6-6 in league play.
 
The win for Union was their fifth straight, becoming the second Gulf South team to 10 wins in league play. Union also gave North Alabama just their second home loss of the season (8-2).
 
Union scored first on a 3-pointer from Amber Rechis at the 18-minute mark. North Alabama responded with five straight points to go up 5-3 at the 15:05 mark. Union then scored eight straight points, coming from four straight DeAnna Thompson buckets. Union led 11-5 with 13:17 left in the half.
 
North Alabama rallied again to take their largest lead of the game, 16-13 with 8:06 left in the half. Union trailed for the last time, 20-18 with 4:23 left in the half, but another 3-pointer from Rechis put Union on top and the Lady Bulldogs never trailed again. Union extended their lead to 29-22 at the half.
 
In the second half, North Alabama tied the game 31-31 four minutes into the half. The game was tied twice more in the second half, with the final time coming 38-38 with 11:13 left to play. Union posted a 12-3 run over the next six minutes to take their largest lead of nine points, 50-41. Union led by nine points four more times in the game including the 67-58 final. North Alabama got as close as five points, 61-56, with 1:21 left. Union however, was 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the final 80 seconds to seal the win.
 
Junior guard Amy Philamlee led the way with 26 points and 12 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. She was 7-of-12 from the field, 2-of-4 from long range, and 10-of-12 from the free throw line. Thompson added 12 points, including eight in the first half. Rechis scored nine points, while LaTesa McLaughlin added eight points and seven rebounds. Union shot 40 percent from the field, 38 percent (6-16) from long range, and 78 percent (21-27) from the free throw line.
 
North Alabama was led by Jennifer Towne with 18 points. Delisa Madry added 12 points, Nichelle Fillmore scored 11 points, and Lauren Faris added 10 points. The Lions got just three points from their bench.  The Lions shot 33 percent, 22 percent (5-23) from long range, and 72 percent (13-18) from the free throw line.
 
Up next for Union will be another conference road game at Lee (Tenn.) Saturday, February 8 at 1 p.m. central time.
