Union women take 58-49 win at Valdosta State

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Union University women's basketball team overcame a slow start to win 58-49 at Valdosta State (Ga.) University. Union improved to 17-5 on the season and 12-4 in the Gulf South Conference. Valdosta State dropped to 10-11 overall and 5-10 in league play.
 
The two teams went back and forth in a slow first half, forcing five ties and six lead changes. Union led by as many as three points once, while Valdosta State led by as many as five points in the first half. The Blazers took a 26-24 lead into the half.
 
In the second half, Union quickly took the lead at 29-28 and never trailed again. With 7:07 left in the game, Union has pushed their lead to double figures for the first time, 44-32. Union led by as many as 16 points, 48-32, and again 50-34, with 3:02 left. Union led by 15 points with 26 seconds left, but a quick 6-0 spurt to close the game cut the final deficit to single digits at 58-49.
 
Union was led by Amy Philamlee with 14 points, the only Union player in double figures. She also led with seven rebounds five assists for Union. LaTesa McLaughlin and Amber Rechis each scored nine points. Union shot 35 percent from the field, 31 percent (9-29) from long range, and 75 percent (15-20) from the free throw line.
 
Valdosta State was led by Kourtnee Williams with 17 points and Rechaundra with 11 points and seven rebounds. The Blazers shot 34 percent from the field, 24 percent (5-21) from 3-point range, and 80 percent (8-10) from the free throw line.
 
Up next for Union will be a home game, Thursday, February 20 versus Christian Brothers at 6:00 p.m.
