Union women hold off West Florida for 77-70 win

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Union University women's basketball posted a 77-70 win at the University of West Florida Thursday night. Union improved to 16-5 on the season and 11-4 in the Gulf South Conference. West Florida dropped to 12-7 overall and 7-6 in league play.
 
The win helped Union avenge a 69-60 loss to West Florida back on January 9 at Union.
 
Union scored first on a layup from Amy Philamlee. After a back-and-forth first four minutes of play, the score was tied 9-9. Senior guard LaTesa McLaughlin then put Union up for good with a 3-pointer. Over the next 12-plus minutes, Union outscored West Florida 39-17 to take their largest lead of the game at 22 points, 48-26.
 
However, over the final three and a half minutes of the first half, West Florida cut the Union deficit down to 14 points (49-35), thanks to a 9-1 run to close the half.
 
Union's Astrid Huttemann scored all of her game-high 18 points in the first half, thanks to 7-of-8 shooting from the field, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range in the first 20 minutes.  As a team, Union shot 56 percent from the field in the first half, including 57 percent (8-14) from long range.
 
In the second half, West Florida continued to cut into the Union lead, and five minutes into the second half, trailed just 55-48. This run that started late in the first half was now at 22-7 for the Argos.
 
But Union started making shots again, building their lead back to double digits. West Florida cut the lead back to seven points, 67-60 with 6:21 left, before Union quickly jumped back up by as many as 15 points, 77-62 with 2:18 left. Union committed a couple of late turnovers and a basket with four seconds left helped the Argos finish the game on an 8-0 run to set the final at 77-70.
 
Huttemann led Union with 18 points. McLaughlin added 17 points, while Philamlee scored 16 points, both making two 3-pointers each. McLaughlin added eight assists and six rebounds, both team highs. Union finished the game 48 percent from the field, 42 percent (10-24) from long range, and 81 percent (13-16) from the free throw line.
 
West Florida was led by Toynetta Johnson with 18 points. Raquel Miller added 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Tessah Holt scored 12 points. Katie Bobos grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. The Argos shot 40 percent from the field, 20 percent (2-10) from 3-point range, and 67 percent (14-21) from the free throw line.
 
Up next for Union will be the fourth of four straight road games, this Saturday at Valdosta State (Ga.) for a 5 p.m. central time tip.
