JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University men's basketball team played their final regular season non-conference game of the year Saturday, defeating Truett-McConnell (Ga.) College 86-71. Union remained perfect on the year at 6-0, while Truett-McConnell dropped to 4-6 overall.
Union struggled in the first half shooting the ball, making just 27 percent from the field and only 22 percent (4-18) of their 3-pointers. Meanwhile, Truett-McConnell shot 44 percent from the field, and a blistering 62 percent (8-13) from long range in the first half.
Union trailed early but took their first lead at 7-6. The two teams went back-and-forth in the first half with Union leading by as many as six points, 20-14. The 35-31 halftime lead for Truett matched their largest lead of the half.
In the second half, Truett went up by five points right away, but Union rallied. After more back-and-forth play, the game was tied for the final time at 52-52. Union took the lead on a layup by
Corieon Pearson and never looked back. Union got their lead up to double figures for the first time, 81-71 with a minute to play. Five late points, including a 3-pointer from
Jordan Montgomery put the final at 86-71.
Union exploded for 55 second half points. Montgomery and
Marterrace Brock both scored 15 second half points to lead the Bulldogs in the rally.
Union was led by Brock with a game-high 23 points. Montgomery added 21 points, while Pearson scored 17 points.
Roy Bullock hit 4-of-6 three pointers to scored 12 points in the game. . Montgomery also added nine rebounds. Union shot 44 percent from the field in the game, including 67 percent from the field in the second half. Union was 13-of-33 (40%) from long range, including 9-of-16 (60%) in the second half. The Bulldogs shot 68 percent (17-25) from the free throw line.
Truett-McConnell was led by Andretti Loyd with 18 points. J'Quayveon Williams added a double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds. Daniel Beausejour scored 12 and David Campbell added 11. Xavier Holland dished out eight assists.
Union committed just four turnovers to 13 from Truett. Truett won the battle of the boards, 38-34, with Union edging Truet 10-8 on the offensive glass.
