Union volleyball sweeps West Georgia in three sets

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University volleyball did quick work Friday night in their 3-0 (26-24, 25-16, 25-18) win over the University of West Georgia at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. Union improved to 8-21 on the season and 3-14 in the Gulf South Conference. West Georgia dropped to 5-21 overall and 2-15 in league play.
 
The first set featured 18 ties and nine lead changes as the two team battled back and forth. Neither team led by more than two points at any time during the set. Union trailed 23-22, but two straight points put the Lady Bulldogs at set point, 24-23. After West Georgia tied the set at 24-24, Union scored the final two points, including a service ace from Savannah Hughes to seal the win.
 
Union took that momentum into the second set. Union never trailed in the set and after the early 1-1 tie, Union began to extend  their lead to the eventual 25-16 win. Set three was close early with eight ties and two lead changes. However, Union took the lead for good 14-13 and pushed out to a 25-18 match winner.
 
Union was led by Hughes and Deja Moorer with 10 kills each. Freshman Ceciley Blanchard added nine kills. Hannah Huguley and Lydia Wright shared the setting duties, posting 22 and 19 assists respectively, while both also led with three aces each. Elise Seufert led with nine digs and McKenna Carter led with three blocks.
 
West Georgia was led by Tiffany Ancrum with nine kills. Kayla Hartman led with 18 assists, Samantha Drane led with nine digs, and Ancrum led with two blocks.
 
Union led West Georgia in kills, 45-37. Union also held the advantage in aces (9-2) and blocks (6-2).
 
Up next for Union will be the final home match of the season, senior night, Tuesday, November 4 at 7:00 p.m. versus Christian Brothers.
