Union volleyball falls 3-0 to league leader Shorter

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University volleyball team dropped a home match 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-21) to Shorter (Ga.) University Friday night at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. Union dropped to 4-11 on the season and 1-8 in the Gulf South Conference. Shorter improved to 10-2 overall and a league best 8-0 in the GSC.
 
Shorter jumped out to an early 8-2 lead in the first set. However, Union stormed back to cut the deficit to just 11-10. Union eventually tied the match at 15-15, but a late run by Shorter set the final at 25-18.
 
The second was close the entire way with 14 ties and three lead changes. The set was tied at 23-23, before Shorter scored the final two points to go up 2-0. In the third set, Union had the hot start, running out to a 6-0 lead. But shorter tied the match at 10-10. Union led again at 11-10, but Shorter pulled ahead and never trailed again, winning 25-21.
 
Union was led by Abbey Wainwright with six kills. Lydia Wright led with 18 assists, Kristin Cook led with three aces, Elise Seufert led with 15 digs, and Mallory Baker led with six blocks.
 
Shorter was led by Erica Baker and Eliszbeth Dowd ith 11 and 10 kills respectively. Dena Pierce and Cheyenne Frady shared the setting duties with 16 and 12 assists each. Fradey and Morgan Cleveland led with two aces each, Dowd had 16 digs and Anna Graham led with three blocks.
 
Shorter led in kills 38-25, 5-4 in aces, with Union leading the blocks 12-4.
 
Up next for Union will be a second straight home conference match versus Lee at 2 p.m., Saturday, October 4.
