JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University volleyball team dropped a tough conference match against Lee University 3-2 (25-22, 25-14, 15-25, 22-25, 15-10) Saturday afternoon. Union fell to 4-12 on the season and 1-9 in Gulf South Conference play, while Lee improved to 6-8 and 4-5 in conference play.
Union came out in the first set playing a very close set that involved 11 tie scores and three lead changes but ultimately Lee took the set 25-22. Lee carried the momentum into the second set scoring the first eight points. The large lead proved too large for Union and the Lady Bulldogs ended up losing the set 25-14 giving Lee at 2-0 lead in the match.
After an extended intermission between the 2
nd and 3
rd set, Union was able to take an early 4-0 lead which allowed them to take the momentum through the rest of the set rolling to a 25-15 win to get on the board.
Union stumbled at the beginning of the fourth set when Lee mounted an early 5-0 lead. However, the Lady Bulldogs were able to fight back through the set to win 25-22 to force a fifth and deciding set.
In the final set of the match both teams came out strong trading points until Lee was able to roll out four straight points which allowed them to take the match with a 15-10 win.
Union was led by
Deja Moorer with 12 kills followed by
Ceciley Blanchard and
Hannah Huguley with 10 apiece. Huguley also led the Lady Bulldogs in digs with 16 and assists with 22.
Lydia Wright also had 22 assists for Union.
Lee was led by Haley Foote with 28 assists and Brooke Wilsman with 14 kills.
Up next for Union will be another home conference match on Tuesday, October 7
th, at 7:00 p.m. against Alabama Huntsville. Tuesday will be Union's annual Pink Night to support breast cancer awareness and everyone is encouraged to wear pink for the match.
