JACKSON, Tenn.- Union University women's soccer lost a conference game against the University of West Alabama Friday night 4-1. Union fell to 2-5 on the season and 0-3 in Gulf South Conference play. West Alabama improved to 8-1 on the regular season and 4-0 in conference play.
West Alabama came into the night on a seven game winning streak and took an early lead when Lydia Sutcliffe headed in a crossed pass from Kirsten Reilly in the 14
th minute of the game.
Reilly would then hit a shot in the 30
th minute of play from outside the 18-yard box that caught Union's freshman goalkeeper
Kristen Francis off guard to take a 2-0 lead.
After a sluggish first half, Union came out strong in the second half with a number of chances and finally capitalizing in the 53
rd minute when
Kayleigh Patterson put a ball into the lower right side of the net.
Elizabeth Clark earned the assist after setting up the pass that let Patterson score.
Union kept the game tight up until the 72
nd when Sutcliffe scored her second goal of the game. Only minutes after, a handball was called on Union inside the box setting up a goal off of a penalty kick in the 74
th minute from Lauren Tate.
Next up for Union will be another conference game when Alabama Huntsville comes into town on Sunday, October 4
th, at 2:00 p.m. at Smith Memorial Complex.
