JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University women's volleyball team fell 3-1 (25-20, 25-22, 26-28, 25-15) at the University of North Alabama Tuesday night. Union dropped to 7-21 on the season and 2-14 in the Gulf South Conference. North Alabama improved to 17-9 overall and 13-4 in league play.
The first set was played close with the two teams going back and forth early. The set was tied 8-8 when North Alabama scored four straight points and seven of the next eight to take a 15-9 lead. Union rallied back and got as close as two points several times late before falling 25-20. The second set was much of the same. After a back and forth start, Union found themselves down 10-6. However, six straight points for Union shot the Lady Bulldogs to a 12-10 lead. North Alabama responded with four straight points to take the lead for good, but Union stayed close. After three straigh points for Union late in the set, Union had cut the deficit to just 23-22. But UNA got the last two points to win 25-22.
In the third set, North Alabama jumped out to a 5-1 lead early. But Union rallied and tied the match 10-10. The two teams again went back and forth over the remainder of the match.Union led 23-19 late but five straight points put North Alabama up 24-23. Union then scored twice to lead 26-25, before UNA tied the match at 26-26. Union got the final two points to win 28-26.
In the fourth set, Union continued the momentum early and jumped to to a 6-2 lead. North Albama rallied as Union clung to an 8-7 lead. North Alabama then scored four straight points and began to dominate the rest of the set, crusing to a 25-15 win.
Union was led by
Deja Moorer with 11 kills.
Lydia Wright and
Hannah Huguley posted 17 and 16 assists respectively, while Huguley led with two aces.
Elise Seufert led with 22 digs, while
Kristin Cook and
Mallory Baker led with two blocks each.
North Alabama was led by Megan Gorey with 16 kills and Natasha Fomina with 10 kills. Andrea DeLeon added 42 assists, Ashtyn Kapovich led with 26 digs, while Leanna Lloyd and Fomina led with five blocks.
North Alabama led Union in kills, 51-44, while Union edged the Lions 5-4 in aces. However, North Alabama out-blocked Union 9-3 and committed just five service errors to Union's 11.
Up next for Union will be a home match Friday, October 31 versus West Georgia at 6:00 p.m.
