Lee slips past Union women’s soccer 1-0

JACKSON, Tenn.- The Union University women's soccer team fell to Lee University 1-0 in a Gulf South Conference matchup at Smith Memorial Soccer Complex. Union dropped to 1-9 in Gulf South Conference play and 3-11 overall. Lee improved to a league best  9-1 in conference and 10-4-1 overall.

Lee controlled the ball for the majority of the first half not allowing Union many opportunities on the goal. The only close shot from Union came off of the foot of Kelsey Wilkes that would have snuck just under the crossbar if not for the great save from Lee's goalkeeper Marbel Egwuenu to punch over the back of the goal.

Lee eventually took the lead in the 33rd minute of play when Michelle Spangler headed in the low corner kick from Kinsey Cichowitz just under the crossbar for the first and only goal of the game.

The second half of the match was more of the same story. Union was not able to mount many meaningful attacks on the Lee goal with the exception of two more good shots of the foot of Wilkes only to be saved by Egwuenu. Kayleigh Patterson also had a strong showing in Sunday's match in her defensive play. Patterson stopped the Lee attack multiple times deep in Union territory which kept the match close.

Up next for Union will be a make-up game against Delta State on Tuesday, October 28th, at 3:00 p.m. in Cleveland, Miss. Then the Lady Bulldogs will finish up their regular season against Christian Brothers on Friday, October 31st, at 5:00 p.m. Senior night festivities will be held before that match.
