West Georgia strikes first, tops Union women’s soccer 3-1

JACKSON, Tenn. –The Union University women's soccer team dropped conference match 3-1 to the University of West Georgia Thursday night at Smith Soccer Complex. Union fell to 2-8 in regular season play and 0-6 in Gulf South Conference play. West Georgia improved to 2-10-2 in the regular season and 2-5-1 in conference play.
 
West Georgia jumped scored first late in the first half when Alexis Davis was able to net the first goal of the match in the 35th minute by putting the ball into the center of the goal from inside the box. Less than half of a minute later the Wolves were able to go up 2-0 when Katie Phillips was able to break past the Union defenders to easily put the ball into the goal.
 
Phillips was able to add her second goal of the game in the 60th minute of play when she put the pass from Kyla Wright-Marshall into an open goal.
 
Union finally got on the board when Kayleigh Patterson earned her second goal of the season off of the pass from Kelsey Graeter in the 74th minute of the match.
 
Elizabeth Clark and Kelsey Wilkes each had four shots on the night for the Lady Bulldogs. Union continues to play short-handed as six starters are out with various injuries.
 
Up next for the Lady Bulldogs will be another conference matchup against Valdosta State on Saturday, October 18th, at 12:00 p.m. in Valdosta, Ga.
