CLINTON, Miss. – The Union University volleyball team earned a split in two road Gulf South Conference matches over the weekend. Friday night, the Lady Bulldogs fell at the University of West Alabama 3-2. Then Saturday afternoon, Union responded with a 3-1 win at Mississippi College. Union moved to 5-14 on the season and 2-11 in league play.
In the win at Mississippi College, Union fell behind 1-0 after a 26-24 first set loss. Union responded to win the second and third sets 25-21 and 25-17. The third set for Union would take a little longer as the Lady Bulldogs outlasted Mississippi College 31-29 to seal the win. It was the second time this season in five wins that Union was able to rally after trailing 1-0 (a 3-2 win over Fort Hayes State).
At West Alabama, Union again was on the short end of a 3-2 loss to West Alabama. Union took the first set 25-18. With the exception of two ties, Union led for the entire set. In the second set won 25-18 by West Alabama, it was again played close with West Alabama maintaining the lead for the entire set except for a brief 2-1 lead by Union. In the third set, West Alabama seemed to keep the momentum and stormed out to a 10-5 lead and led 19-13 late. However, Union stormed back and tied the set at 23-23 and won 25-23 to take a 2-1 lead. However, Union could not hold on to the momentum or the match as West Alabama led for all of the last two sets to win 25-19 and 15-10 and take the match.
Up next for Union is a weekend trip to Florida to play in the Rollins College South Region Crossover Classic.
