JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University women's basketball team posted an 85-62 win over the University of West Alabama Saturday afternoon at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. Union improved to 12-4 on the season and 7-3 in the Gulf South Conference. West Alabama dropped to 4-12 overall and 1-9 in league play.
Union made 18 3-pointers in the game (18-34, 53 percent). This marked the fourth time in program history for Union to make 18 3-pointers in a game. The record is 19 made 3-pointers, which has happed three different times.
Over the last three home games, Union has made 52 3-pointers (17 vs. Valdosta State, 17 versus Alabama Huntsville, 18 versus West Alabama). In each of the last two games, Union has posted field goal and 3-pointer shooting percentages above the 50 percent mark.
Today's game started slow with Union scoring first on one of two free throws from
Amy Philamlee. The score remained 1-0 until a pair of free throws from West Alabama's Quentinette Odom put her team up 2-0 at the 18:03 mark.
Union got things rolling and outscored West Alabama 23-9 over the next six minutes to take their largest lead of the half, 24-11, at the 12:31 mark.
West Alabama responded with an 11-0 run of their own to cut their deficit down to two points with 9:44 left. Union jumped back up by ten points, 34-24, but once again, West Alabama rallied to cut the deficit to 37-36. Union managed a 42-38 lead at the half.
Union drained 11-of-22 from behind the arc in the first half, while also shooting 50 percent from the field. However, West Alabama won the rebound battle in the first 20 minutes, 17-15, including seven offensive rebounds leading to 13 second chance points. Philamlee and
Kelsey Risner each hit three 3-pointers in the first half.
In the second half Union quickly pushed their lead out to 12 points, 59-47 with 14:57 left to play. Union led by 12 again, 61-49 with 12:40 to play, but again allowed West Alabama to rally. The Tigers cut their deficit to seven points, 61-54 with 9:59 left to play. But five straight points form
Astrid Huttemann put Union back up by 11 points, 65-54. Huttemann scored 11 of her 17 points in the second half.
Union finally started to pull away thanks to four straight 3-pointers, two from Risner, and one each from Huttemann, and
Chelsea Bodiford. A 14-0 run took Union from a 67-58 lead at the 6:03 mark to an 81-58 lead with 2:20 left to play. Union controlled the last six minutes of play, outscoring West Alabama 18-4.
Union was led by Philamlee with 22 points, including 4-of-9 from long range. Risner hit 6-of-9 3-pointers for her 18 points. Huttemann added 17 points, including 4-of-6 3-pointers, while LaTesa McLauhglin scored 10 points with seven assists. Union shot 51 percent from the field, 53 percent (18-34) from behind the arc, and 81 percent (21-26) from the charity stripe.
West Alabama was led by Kelcia Bufkin with 22 points while Odom added 18 points. The Tigers shot 36 percent from the field, 33 percent (7-21) from long range, and 81 percent (13-16) from the free throw line.
Up next for Union will be the third of four straight home games, Thursday, January 30 versus Shorter (Ga.) at 6:00 p.m.
