Late surge propels Union women over Alabama Huntsville 105-86

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University women's basketball team posted a 105-86 win over the University of Alabama in Huntsville Thursday night at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. Union improved to 11-4 on the season and 6-3 in the Gulf South Conference. Alabama Huntsville dropped to 9-6 overall and 4-5 in league play.
 
Union topped the century mark for the first time this season with the 105 points tonight. Their previous high was 98 points versus Reinhardt (Ga.) in the season opener.
 
The game started fast with both teams making four of their first five 3-point attempts as the score was tied 16-16 just over five minute into the action.
 
After a 17-17 tie at the 13:19 mark, Alabama Huntsville was able to build a lead thanks to a 12-2 run. Their lead of 29-19 at the 10:12 mark was their largest of the game.
 
Union responded in a big way with a 17-0 run, including seven points during that stretch from junior guard Amy Philamlee. Union pushed their first half lead to nine points twice late in the first half, before a quick 5-0 run by the Lady Charges cut their halftime deficit to 48-44.
 
In the second half, Union maintained a lead for a while, but Alabama Huntsville worked to take a brief lead, 62-61, with 13:26 left to play.
 
At that point, Union took over in a big way with 13 straight points that started a stretch where Union outscored Alabama Huntsville 29-4 over a seven minute period. Union led 90-66 with just under seven minutes to play. Union led by as many as 28 points, 105-77, before the Lady Chargers scored the final nine points to set the final at 105-86.
 
Philamlee matched her season high and career high with 32 points in the game, 16 points in each half. She posted 32 in the season opener this year. Philamlee was 8-of-13 from the field, including 4-of-7 from 3-point range, and 12-of-15 from the free throw line. Four other Union players reached double figures including Amber Rechis with 20 points on 6-of-12 shooting from long range. Astrid Huttemann added 16 points, while LaTesa McLaughlin and Kelsey Risner scored 12 points each. Union shot 53 percent from the field, 52 percent (17-33) from long range, and 80 percent (24-30) from the free throw line.
 
The Lady Bulldogs equaled their season high with 17 3-pointers in the game, matching 17 made versus Valdosta State in the last home game. Union committed a season high 19 turnovers, but  13 came in the second half, including five turnovers in the final seven possessions of the game.
 
Three Lady Chargers reached double figures led by seniors Jordan Smith with 23 and Jasmine Hammon with 22 points. Hammon scored 17 points in the first half, but was held in check with just five points. Shannon Steinert scored 11 points. Alabama Huntsville shot 38 percent from the field, 33 percent (10-30) from long range, and 77 percent (20-26) from the free throw line.
 
Up next for Union will be a second of four straight home games when West Alabama comes to Jackson for a 2 p.m. game Saturday afternoon.
