Union volleyball sweeps a pair of matches Saturday

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University volleyball team posted a pair of victories Saturday afternoon at Fred DeLay Gymnasium in a tri-match featuring Union, the University of Arkansas at Monticello, and Victory (Tenn.) University. Union won the first match of the day 3-1 (25-14, 25-18, 20-25, 25-22) over Arkansas-Monticello and then took the final match of the day 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-13) over Victory. Arkansas-Monticello topped Victory 3-0 in the middle match. Union improved to 4-8 on the season, Arkansas-Monticello is now 5-7 overall, and Victory dropped to 6-5.
                                 
In the first match, Union jumped out to a quick two-set lead as they controlled play for most of the way. In the third set, UAM took over and with a dominating set to cut Union's lead to 2-1. However, Union answered back and battled a tough AUM team to finish off the match with a 25-22 win.
 
Union was led by Kristin Cook and Mallory Baker with 11 kills each, while Deja Moorer added 10 kills. Lydia Wright added 46 assists, and led with five aces. Elise Seufert led with 28 digs and also tallied four aces. Baker led with four blocks.
 
Arkansas-Monticello was led by Jessica Cuba with nine kills, Amy Bazemore with 22 assists, Cuba with two aces, Tusalava Kuaea with 19 digs, and Tasha Evans with six blocks.
 
In the final set, Union and Victory played close out the gate in each set, but Union was able to pull away each time for the three-set win. Union was led by Cook with 10 kills, while Moorer and Baker added eight kills each. Wright led with 35 assists, Seufert led with three aces and 13 digs, and McKenna Carter led with five blocks.
 
Victory was led by Colette Sample with 10 kills, Lonzettea Murchison with 20 assists, Iva Cotric with 23 digs, and Taylor Hensley with two blocks.
 
Union will now hit the road for four straight matches, three of which are Gulf South Conference matches. Union plays next at Alabama Huntsville Tuesday, September 24.
