JACKSON, Tenn. – Union University lost at home to Shorter (Ga.) University on Sunday afternoon in men's soccer, 1-0. The defeat was the first of the season for the Bulldogs (2-1-1, 0-1-1 Gulf South Conference). With the victory, Shorter (2-1-1, 2-0 GSC) remains tied with West Florida atop the conference standings.
The first half provided several goal scoring opportunities for both sides. The goalkeepers were up to the challenge of matching their counterpart. Matt Kesler made five saves in the opening frame for Union. Nicolas Ferrigno denied four shots to keep the game tied, 0-0 at intermission.
Francisco Miranda put a shot on frame from Ryan Horn in the 55th minute that moved from the right side of the goalie box into the left corner for a 1-0 Shorter advantage. An opportunity for Union to claim their first Gulf South Conference victory of 2013 was aided in the 70th minute as Lucas Cavenco of Shorter was issued a red card for violent dissent. The Hawks played the remainder of the contest a man down. Union had a couple shots from Clayton Martin and Alex Pratt in the final minutes of the game, but each was corralled by Ferrigno to seal the contest.
Union outshot Shorter 15-13, but Shorter claimed a 7-5 advantage in the deciding half. The Hawks also took five corner kicks to only three for Union.
Union is off until Friday, when they travel to Pensacola, Fla. for their first Gulf South Conference road match versus University of West Florida at 7:30 p.m.
