Union women finish third in NCCAA National Tourney

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - The Union University women's basketball team enared a 64-53 win over Oklahoma Christian University in the third place game of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA). Union finished the season 22-9, while Oklahoma Christian finished 20-13.

For Union, this was the 30th straight season for Union to have single digit losses. The nine losses this seaosn, their first year of NCAA DII competition, was the most losses in a season since the 10 losses in the 1982-83 season.

The game was close for the first 12 minutes as Union maintained a small lead while Oklahoma Christian forced three ties. With 8:32 left in the half, Oklahoma Christian took their first and only lead of the game 16-15. However, Union posted an 8-0 run to regain control and then maintained the lead for the rest of the way.

Union led 27-21 at the half.

In the second half, Union quickly extended the lead to double figures 31-21. Oklahoma Christian made one last push with a 5-0 run, but Union got the lead back to double figures. Union led by as many as 16 points in the second half, maintaining the double-digit lead for the final nine minutes of the game.

Union was led by Shelby Ashcraft with 17 points. Amy Philamlee added 15 points, while Amber Rechis scored 11 points and Astrid Huttemann scored 10 points. Union shot 41 percent from the field, 35 percent from long range (8-23), and 90 percent (18-20) from the free throw line.

Oklahoma Christian was led by Roz Hamilton with 15 points and Krista Stevens with 11 points. The Eagles shot 28 percent from the field, 17 percent (4-23) from 3-point range, and 91 percent (19-21) from the free throw line.
