JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University women's basketball team posted an 88-36 win over Rust (Miss.) College Tuesday night at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. Union improved to 4-1 on the season, while Rust dropped to 2-4 overall.
Union played nine players in the game, eight of the Lady Bulldogs scored in the game, including five in double figures.
Amy Philamlee continued to lead Union with a 20 points per game average on the season, posting 20 points in the win tonight. She was one of three Union players with at least three 3-pointers in the game.
Chelsea Bodiford hit four 3-pointers and had 13 points, while
Kelsey Risner added three 3-pointers and ended with 11 points.
Shelby Ashcraft added 12 points for Union, while
Tymeria Franklin scored 11 points.
Senior guard
LaTesa McLaughlin flirted with a triple-double on the night, grabbing 10 rebounds, dishing out nine assists, and scoring eight points. She also added six steals on the evening.
Senior forward
Christina Coney played in her first real action since suffering an injury in the first game of the season. She contributed eight points and four rebounds in 13 minutes of play.
Union launched 75 shots in the game, making just 29 for 39 percent shooting. Union was 32 percent (14-44) from long range, and made 16-of-18 (89%) from the free throw line.
Union started slow as Rust jumped out to a 7-2 lead over the first four minutes of play. However, Union came alive and outscored Rust 46-10 over the remaining 16 minutes of the first half. Union led 48-17 at the half.
Union continued to extend their lead, going up by as many as 53 points late in the game, before taking the 88-36 final.
Rust was led by Whitney McNeal with 10 points and Shermeka Lewis with six points. Lewis was 2-of-2 from 3-point range. The Bearcats shot 22 percent from the field, 17 percent (2-12) from long range, and 57 percent (12-21) from the free throw line.
Up next for Union will be the second game in a stretch of three straight home game. Union will host Bellermine (Ky.) Saturday at 2 p.m.
