Union topped 5-0 by Palm Beach Atlantic

JACKSON, Tenn. – In the final regular season home game of 2013 for the Union University men's soccer team, the Bulldogs were beaten 5-0 by the Palm Beach Atlantic (Fla.) University Sailfish. The non-conference result leaves Union 3-12-1 overall. The win moves Palm Beach Atlantic to 10-3-1.  The Union men's soccer team went winless at home for the first time in their 16 year history.

Palm Beach Atlantic, one of the top 10 scoring teams in NCAA Division II racked up two goals in the first half for a 2-0 halftime lead. A Sailfish throw in led to the first goal as Daniel Pena kicked in his first goal of the season at 14:30. Kenny Hogg, No. 5 in total goals in Division II put Palm Beach Atlantic up 2-0 with under seven minutes left in the half lacing a pass from Pena into the goal.

The Sailfish continued to attack aggressively with Melo Matutu popping in his third goal of the season for a 3-0 advantage at 58:00. Hogg notched his second goal of the game with 20:25 to play off a rebound shot that was blocked off a Union defender. The goal was No. 22 of the season for Hogg, who averages 1.36 goals per game, second in Division II. Kevin Ireland passed the ball to Pena, who launched a shot that smashed off the right post and bounced into the back of the net at 80:14 for the 5-0 score.

Palm Beach Atlantic outshot Union 15-8. The Sailfish took four corner kicks. Union received four yellow cards in the contest, while Palm Beach Atlantic drew three. The four yellow cards given to Union tied a season high, which occurred in three other matches. The Sailfish were whistled for being offside five times. Union was offside once.

Union travels to Delta State University (Miss.) on Wednesday for a 3:00 p.m. match. The game is a Gulf South Conference make up contest from Sept. 29, which was postponed due to field conditions. Union is seeking to complete the regular season with a win. Union is riding an 11 match losing skid. The Bulldogs have not won since a 1-0 win at West Florida on Sept. 20.
