SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Union University Lady Bulldogs dominated the second half in a 62-51 win over Missouri University of Science and Technology in Drury University's Classic. Union improves to 3-0 with the win., while Missouri S&T slips to 3-2.
The Lady Bulldogs were cold from the floor to open the game against Missouri S&T. Union started the contest missing their first seven shots from the field. While Union was off target early, MST built a 4-0 lead.
Shelby Ashcraft put Union on the board with a driving layup about four minutes in to make the score 4-2. Union had missed eight of their first nine shots by the first media timeout at 14:50. Ashcraft hit the front end of a two-shot free throw opportunity at 13:40 to pull within 9-3.
Astrid Huttemann raced down the left side of the lane for a layup making it a 12-5 contest. Union trailed 16-5 after a jumper by Toni Knar of Missouri S&T. Midway through the first half Missouri S&T held a 16-6 rebounding advantage. From 8:36 to 4:57 in the half Union went on a 14-6 run to narrow the lead to 22-20. Amy Philamlee swished a three point basket to end a streak of nine long distance misses to start the game for Union.

Kelsey Risner launched a three point basket, Franklin made a jumper and Philamlee put in a layup. Missouri S&T responded by ending the half on an 8-0 run to lead 30-20 at halftime. Union was scoreless in the last 4:56 of the half.
Union hit shot 21.9 percent from the field in the half on 7-of-32 from the field. The Lady Bulldogs were 2-of-19 from three point range. The 19 long distance shots in a half is a season high by the Lady Bulldogs. Union was tough on the boards trailing 25-17 in the half against the taller Missouri S&T team. For the second straight game, Missouri S&T knocked in 11-of-24 shots, 45.8 percent in the opening 20 minutes.
For the second straight game, Union dressed just seven players because of a host of injuries. Missouri S&T was minus a few players also and only played eight in the game. After trailing by 10 at the break, Union outscored Missouri S&T 42-21 in the second half.
Union's Huttemann went on an 8-0 run to cut the Missouri S&T advantage to 30-28 to start the second half. After opening by coasting to the cup for a layup, she added back-to-back three point baskets that forced Missouri S&T to call a timeout at 18:24. Layups from Ashcraft and Philamlee sliced the margin to one point, 33-32. The two teams were tied 33-33 and 35-35 before Missouri S&T responded with 5-0 spurt to regain a five point lead, 40-35. Union answered knotting the score 40-40 with a Risner three, then Philamlee ripped down a defensive board and ran the length of the court for a layup. Consecutive three point shots by Risner put Union in front 46-42 with 7:30 to play. Coming out after the final media time out Huttemann drilled a three point shot from the top of the key for a 53-47 score. McLaughlin fed a pass to a cutting Philamlee to nudge the lead to 55-49 with 2:15 to go. The first three point basket of the game by McLaughlin at 1:32 upped the Union edge to 58-51. McLaughlin added four free throws in the final :20 for the 62-51 Union victory.
Union finished 21-of-63 from the field for 33.3 percent. The Lady Bulldogs were 9-of-35 from 3-point range, 25.7 percent. Missouri S&T outrebounded Union 41-39. Union committed 13 turnovers, while only dishing nine assists. Union had six steals in the contest.
Union was led by Philamlee with 15 points.
Kelsey Risner added 14 points, including four 3-pointers. Huttemann scored 13 points including three 3-pointers.
Missouri S&T was led by Toni Knar with 16 points and Elsie Greenwood with 10 points.
Union will play tomorrow against host Drury (5-0) at 5:30 p.m. The game against the Lady Panthers is the second of the season for the Lady Bulldogs against a ranked opponent. Drury is currently No. 16 in the WBCA poll.
