JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University men's soccer team kept their season alive with a 6-1 victory over Tennessee Temple University in the quarterfinals of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) MidEast Region Tournament. The Bulldogs are now 5-12-1, while the Crusaders conclude their season 3-16.
Caleb Mills got Union a 1-0 lead when he took a pass from
Alex Pratt and laced it into the goal at 7:15 for a 1-0 score. Each team took four shots in the first half. Pratt took three of the four Union shots. Mario Paiva had half the shots by the Crusaders.
Union opened the second half scoring in the 47th minute with a goal from by
Trey Scogin. Pratt then worked his way into the score column placing a ball from Scogin in the goal at 51:43 for a 3-0 lead. Tennessee Temple was the beneficiary of an own goal in the 54th minute. The slick ball was rapidly played back by the Union defense and sped past the Union goalkeeper.
Joe Shultz booted a cross to Pratt in front of the net, who one timed a shot past Tennessee Temple goalkeeper Josue Fernandez for a 4-1 lead in the 70th minute.
Pedro Silva scored his first goal of the season beating Fernandez at 78:19 for a 5-1 Union edge. In his final home match, captain
Diego Santos at 84:42 kicked in his first goal since Sept. 7 to complete the scoring in the 6-1 win.
Union outshot Tennessee Temple 12-6. Six cards were issued in the contest, four presented to Union and two given to Tennessee Temple.
The victory is the first at home for Union in their final home match on the pitch at the Smith Memorial Soccer Complex. Union has won two consecutive matches for the second time this season. Union went more than two months without posting back to back wins. The Bulldogs opened the season with road wins Sept 5 and 7.
For the second season in a row the Bulldogs scored a game high in goals against the Crusaders. Union and Tennessee Temple last met one year ago (Nov. 16, 2012) on the pitch at Smith Memorial Soccer Complex with the Bulldogs taking the win 8-0.
Krister Andreassen and
Seth Guiler are current Bulldogs who scored in that victory. Guiler also had a career high three assists in the match.
